First Day of Clinicals...

...and I survived! My biggest worry of the day was being late because I am in NO WAY a morning person! I was unfamiliar to the clinical site and the side of town it was on so I was worried about being lost. The site was easy to find, it was all the red lights I hit going down Tennessee that set me back on time. I can’t remember the last time I was on the road that early. There were hardly any cars in sight! For future clinicals, I must make myself wake up a lot earlier to avoid that stress. After I arrived at 645 on the dot, whew, I was so excited to meet my patient!
I was nervous the resident wouldn’t like me. That maybe the patient wouldn’t react well to a stranger following them around and asking questions. To my surprise, the patient couldn't have been happier spend the day with me. She was so pleasant and eager to tell me all about herself! She was a great host. It turned out to be a great learning experience. The vital signs were easier than expected to get although taking her blood pressure was a little challenging.Unaware of how much you have to pump up a cuff with someone who has high systolic blood pressure, I got a little scared. I didn't know if I was pumping too much and hurting her poor arm with easily tear-able skin! but she was a good sport and I got all my vitals with accuracy!
I have a little more confidence in getting vital signs and a little less fear of communicating with a patient. Originally I thought today would be a long day with lots of down time but the time flew by quickly. I can only imagine a real shift as a nurse on the floor going by faster. I’m so excited for another clinical day! Now it’s time to get through the midterm. Can’t believe we are already half way through fundamentals! Good luck all! Happy Studying!
